Sylvia Snowden

Sylvia Snowden (b. 1942, Raleigh, North Carolina) lives and works in Washington, D.C. She received a BA from Howard University in 1963 and an MA in 1965, studying with artists including James Porter, Lois Mailou Jones, James Wells, and David C. Driskell. She also studied at the Académie de la Grand Chaumière in Paris and attended the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture on scholarship.

Solo exhibitions include The Hepworth Wakefield, Wakefield (2024); Franklin Parrasch Gallery, New York (2023, 2021); Edel Assanti, London (2023, 2022); Andrew Kreps Gallery, New York (2022); and American University Museum, Washington, D.C. (2016), among others.

American Art Catalogues published Sylvia Snowden: M Street in 2022, with essays by Gavin Delahunty and Rebecca VanDiver and a conversation between Snowden and Nathaniel Mary Quinn. AAC also published Sylvia Snowden: Shell, Glimpses in 2023, accompanying Snowden's exhibition of the same series at Franklin Parrasch Gallery.
