Peter Shear (b 1980. Beverly Farms, Massachusetts) is an American artist who lives and works in Bloomington, Indiana. Elusive and spare in their presentation, his paintings hover in an interstitial space between abstraction and representation, often incorporating elements of both. They can suggest figures, landscapes, or architecture, or simply exist as spontaneous configurations of lines and colors.
His work has been exhibited in solo and two-person exhibitions at Mendes Wood DM, Brussels (2026); Mendes Wood DM, Germantown (2025); American Art Catalogues, New York (2024); Clearing, New York (2024); Cheim & Reid, New York (2023); Castle, Los Angeles (2022); Fortnight Institute, New York (2021); KOKI Arts; Tokyo (2021).
In 2024, American Art Catalogues published Accident Report, an artist’s book documenting Shear’s paintings and works on paper.
